rest

I just came out of a 2 week run of back-2-back retreats, and all the planning that’s involved with those.  it was crazy.  by time my sunday night drive home came after Velocity i was literally trying to keep my eyes open.  i had even skipped a few days of my bible reading plan due to the busyness.

all that to say that the past 2 days have been amazing.  summed up in one word:  rest.

i am a podcast junkie as of late, and the one i am loving is Mark Driscoll’s weekly message to Mars Hill Church in Seattle.  during my run yesterday, i listened to his latest talk.  he said one phrase that caught my attention –

“you have no business enjoying restful solitude unless you have poured yourself out in ministry.”

and

“If Satan can’t make you sin, he’ll keep you busy.  Not doing bad things, but neglecting first things.”

interesting.

you can’t fool god

i, along with a few others, am reading through the gospels in 40 days.  in matthew 25 i came across this passage that i’ve read many times, but this time something new stuck out.

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.  All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

if i was a shepherd, i would hope that it would be very easy for me to distinguish between a sheep and a goat.  i imagine it’s the same with God.  those who aren’t living for Him are not fooling Him.  He knows a goat when he sees it.  i pray that my life is lived in such a way that it is obvious that Jesus lives in me.

Kalahari

This week Velocity High School Ministry is at Kalahari Indoor Water Park.  Pics will be up later tonight.

As a staff we have two goals:

1.  Provide an atmosphere where students can build relationships with other students and adult leaders.

2.  Enlarge the students’ view of God.

Thanks for praying.

Holiday Health Challenge

i have grown to admire carlos whittaker, what he stands for, and his influence in the ministry world.

he recently put out this challenge.  you can watch it here.

basically, for the next 30 days, instead of making holiday excuses for the disconnect we feel in our lives, let’s make an intentional effort to grow in certain areas.  mainly:  spiritual, relational, physical.

so here are my goals:

1.  physical – get under 200Ibs (currently 206)

2. relational – hang out with my parents more intentionally (coffee, lunches, etc)

3. spiritual – finish B90x (before 2010) & memorize the verses los puts on his blog.

hope you’ll come along for the ride.

is what you’re saying beneficial?

Jeremiah 23:32 says this:

Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,” declares the Lord.  “They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them.  They do not benefit these people in the least.” (emphasis added)

God seems to be using Jeremiah to call out a ton of false teachers and prophets.  They’re all over the place, pretending to be sent from God.  In verse 28 of the same chapter, God urges those have His word to speak it faithfully.

Notice, though, that in verse 32, God specifically calls out one of the weaknesses of the false prophets.  It doesn’t help anyone! God’s Word is always beneficial.

If we’re truly teaching God’s word.  It’s gonna help someone.  Is what you’re saying beneficial?

what my phone can do

my phone is awesome.  it’s an iPhone.  at any moment i can:

check my email

pay my phone bill

check my bank statement

make a car payment

update my twitter/facebook status

track my weight loss

read the Bible

check the weather

keep up with the latest football games

listen to music

check the latest woot.com ‘shirt of the day’

and oh…send text messages and make phone calls.

it’s pretty great.

but if i’m not careful, i am proned to be more concerned about my phone than i am about how close i got to looking like Jesus today.  dang.  that hurt.

just thought i’d remind myself of that.
