(another) weekend update

has it been a week since i last posted?  wow.

well.  this last weekend was quite busy.  it started friday.  velocity decided to do the 30 Hour Famine that world vision hosts.  me and 35 other velocity staff and students started fasting around 7:00a on friday.  we got together, had some worship, played some games, slept at the church, served in detroit, then ended the fast at 1:00p saturday afternoon.  thanks to anne gardner we had a kickin’ “traditional” african meal.  overall we raised over $4,000 for world vision to help feed kids in africa.

then came velocity.

i gave the talk on “who do you say jesus is?” it was based off of peter’s confession in matthew 16:15 – “You are the Christ, son of the living God.”

for a creative element, we had two students spray paint both positive and negative views of jesus on to a large piece of muslin fabric (see pic) … after the talk, the band did three worship songs from behind the fabric…it was a powerful night of confession and worship of who jesus is.

Weekend Update

saturday was a relaxing day.  another one of those day that no work has to be done (on my part).  I took some time to read crazy love (haven’t finished it yet).  in MI it was a sunny 55 degrees (F) outside, so that made for a more cheerful attitude than usual.  tony tice spoke at northridge church saturday night…i enjoyed being challenged on being a person of truth 100% of the time.

sunday was a long day.  bill and i drove to the birmingham campus of kensington community church.  it was a great experience.  northridge is launching our first regional campus in saline, mi.  so it was great to see how other churches are doing the whole multi-site gig.

this pic is of the junior high group [breakaway].  they meet right outside of the cafeteriaimg_0063

this is the main auditorium [where the big people go to church]img_0068

*all pics were taken with my iPhone*

sunday night we had velocity.  it was a blast.  bill brought the talk – the main point was god gives rest.  whoa! did our students need to hear this one!!  i guess if bill and i are honest though, the talk was designed for him and i.  we have been going and going…we need to find rest in the God we’re serving!

i’m excited about teaching this next sunday.  the topic?  “who do you say jesus is?” gonna be sweet.

velocity update – march 1, 2009

redletters_hd

this past weekend in velocity we our opening talk for “red letters.”  i have the talk, and i was pretty excited about it.  i talked out of matthew 9:9-13.  jesus walks up to matthew, an outcast in that society, and asks him to follow.  so crazy.  i took it from two angles

the disciples:  no doubt the ones already following jesus were a little confused as to why a “tax collector” was joining their bunch.  i asked, “who in your life are you denying the life-changing love of jesus?”  we mainly do that because of decisions those people have made…we think jesus wouldn’t want them following him.

matthew:  we’ve all been here, i’m sure.  i know i’ve felt sometimes that i’m not good enough to follow jesus.  oh boy does jesus shatter that thinking.  anyone can change.  this is jesus we’re talking about…the same dude who rose from the dead!  wow, the power in believing that is immense.  who do you know that is “too far gone?”  even when everyone thinks a person is “lost” … he is still worth being found in God’s eyes.

next week bill is tackling some red letters.  stay tuned for a recap

weekend update + series ending

this weekend was a bit busy.  I spoke in all 3 of our Junior High services…which went really great.  Bill Holbrook did wonderful leading volunteers so I wouldn’t have to worry about any of that.

my talk was on boundaries in dating. great subject for jh kids.

then sunday night came.  this time bill spoke in velocity, which was a nice break for me.  we wrapped up our “goin’ all the way” series with a talk on loneliness.  bill hit it out of the park.

our next series is called ‘red letters.’ watch the promo video here.

another key event this weekend:  i was given a free iPhone.  a volunteer decided to bless me with his 4G 1st generation iPhone.  i am now an AT&T customer.

i’m still reading crazy love and tribes

what i’m excited about:  like having an iPhone isn’t enough?!?  i’m excited to solidify our summer trips, as well as plan for our EMERGE weekend experience.

Goin’ all the way – week 2

Sunday February 15, 2009 – Velocity Service || 6p

For a synopsis of week one, click here.

going_way_312x2122

Series:  Goin’ all the way

Talk: Love

Summary: John 15:13 and 1 John 3:16 lay it out there.  [real] love is laying your life down for someone else.  Jesus was the example.  we are to follow.  what does that look like for a high school student?  putting ones own agenda aside for another person is certainly difficult, but it is what we are called to do…in every relationship, not just dating/marriage.

Bottom Line: Love is sacrifice

Creative Elements: we showed 2 videos.  this one. and  that one.

Song List: You’ll come, Lead me to the cross, Better is one day

Goin’ All The Way – week one

Sunday, February 8, 2009 – Velocity Service || 6p

going_way_312x2121

Series:  Goin’ all the way (a title we borrowed from lifechurch.tv)

Talk: Lust

Description: Lust, in it’s simplest form, is “unrestrained (sexual) desire.”  In 2 Samuel 13, a story is told of Amnon and Tamar.  Amnon was infatuated with Tamar (understatement!).  However, Tamar was a virgin…and also Amnon’s sister (yuck).  He did everything to get with her…she obviously didn’t like the idea.  She was open to the idea of marriage, but Amnon wanted her right then. Because of Amnon’s unrestrained desire, he raped Tamar…ironically enough, afterwards Amnon hated Tamar…even more than he had loved her.

Bottom Line: Lust will always promise what it cannot deliver(true intimacy and love)

Application: What area of life do we have “unrestrained desire”?  1 Thess 4 teaches to “control our body…” in ways that are holy and honorable.

Creative Elements: We opened the service with this video.  I also showed this video during my talk; to illustrate what “lack of self-control” looks like.

Song List: You Deserve, All because of Jesus, Break Free (note – mostly student led worship!)

Weekend Update

friday: After a long of work I was able to snag some much needed “thinking” time.   I settled in at my favorite coffee establishment…read, blogged, thought, researched.  It was a great evening.

saturdays are great because I can sleep in a bit (9a).  I got a decent run in at the gym, worked on my message for Velocity, ate some lunch with some friends…then went to Huron Valley Hospital to celebrate the birth of Emery Daniella Collesano.  Check out Josh Collesano’s blog for pics and updates.

sunday:  Spent the morning putting final touches on my message.  Saw my parents for all of 5 minutes.  Went to church to start preparing for Velocity.

where I’m at:  plymouth…that rarely changes.

books I’m reading: Tribes, The Blessed Life, (soon to be) Crazy Love

this week: i need to finalize our spring retreat cost…this is becoming more stressful than i originally anticipated

looking forward to: researching and creating a talk about Love.

a movie i just recently saw was “Paul Blart: Mall Cop.”  I enjoy the comedy of Kevin James…from that perspective it was a good movie.  The overall storyline was definitely predictable … but it’s hard to find a movie that isn’t.
